At 3 a.m. on November 25th an ATV accident occurred in a field in a rural area of Miami County. The rollover accident resulted in the death of a 17-year-old, and the driver was flown to the hospital with injuries that were non-life-threatening. There were also two other passengers that were uninjured. ATV’s are typically equipped to carry only 1 or 2 persons, but in this case there were 4 people total on the same vehicle.
The victim has been identified as Tyler Rathbun, a star soccer player at Shawnee Mission East High School. The cause of the fatal accident has not yet been released, and is still being investigated.
ATV accidents killed 317 people in 2010, and resulted in over 100,000 emergency room related visits. In the State of Kansas, there were 29 reported deaths involving ATV’s from 2007 to 2010.
