Spinal cord trauma can be caused by any number of injuries to the spine. They can result from motor vehicle accidents, falls, sports injuries (diving into shallow water, contact sports such as football), industrial accidents, gunshot wounds, assault, and other causes.
Spinal cord injuries often result in loss of sensation or paralysis. This includes total paralysis or numbness and varying degrees of movement or sensation loss. Death is possible, particularly if there is paralysis of the breathing muscles.
A person’s recovery from a spinal cord injury usually depends on the level of injury. Injuries near the top of the spine result in more extensive disability than do injuries low in the spine.
Prevention includes using proper safety equipment at work, checking the depth of water before diving, inspecting for obstacles before sledding, using proper technique and equipment when playing contact sports, wearing a helmet when riding a bicycle or motorcycle or horseriding, and buckling your seatbelt every time you get into a car.
If you or someone you know has suffered a spinal cord injury the Law Offices of Peter A. Jouras, Jr. can help if the injury was caused by another’s negligence.
