Reducing bicycle accidents with bicycle traffic signals

Bicycle safety has long been a problem on our increasingly congested roads and thoroughfares. Cities have been walking a difficult line between trying to accommodate bicycle traffic on their streets while also recognizing that the road is more dangerous than ever for these two wheeled travelers due to the widespread epidemic of driver distractions in this country. Now at least 16 cities have installed special bicycle shaped traffic signals at intersections to help prevent accidents by affording the bicycle rider more time to cross the intersection. The signals can be incorporated into regular traffic signals or stand alone. They can be timed or activated when a cyclist approaches the intersection. Both Chicago and Atlanta are among the cities which have installed such signals at intersections in their cities. Will Kansas City be next?
